3 held guilty in anti-Sikh riots case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday described the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as a “holocaust” in independent India and convicted three persons for lynching three members of a Sikh family during the riots which broke out after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
The three accused — Harparsad Bhardwaj, RP Tiwari and Jagdish Giri — all residents of Mansarovar Park in East Delhi, were held guilty for killing three persons, including a Delhi police head constable by leading a mob of over 150 rioters.
“It was virtually a holocaust in independent India. Complainant Harminder Kaur lost her husband Niranjan Singh, a head constable in Delhi Police, young son Gurpal Singh and son-in-law Mahender Singh in that massacre,” additional sessions judge Rajender Kumar Shastri said.
The court would hear the arguments on the quantum of sentence on Wednesday.
However, the court acquitted two other accused — Suraj Giri and a woman Kamlesh — of their involvement in the crime for want of evidence.
Former union minister HKL Bhagat, who is no more, was also named as one of the accused in the case, but had been discharged earlier due to insufficient evidence.
While convicting the other three accused, the court gave credence to the eyewitness account of Kaur who had lost her husband and young son and rejected the contention of the accused that there was an inordinate delay in registration of the FIR. It also dismissed the plea that the victims’ bodies or any looted article were recovered during the probe.
“There was remote possibility of producing such evidence,” the court said and termed the case as an “exceptional one” in which the FIR was registered in 1996, 12 years after the carnage following the directions by a committee set up by the Delhi government.
The committee of Justice ML Jain (former judge of Delhi High Court) and AK Banerjee (retd IGP) had recommended registration of criminal cases after examining the affidavits filed by the affected families of the riots.

SGPC member summoned to Akal Takht

Jalandhar: Akal Takht Jathedar has summoned a member of SGPC for clarification regarding carrying an effigy of Parkash Singh Badal during a protest at Jammu in November, 2006. The effigy had allegedly depicted Badal as Ravana and one of the heads of the effigy was depicted as that of the Akal Takht Jathedar.
Asking SGPC member and Akal Purakh ki Fauj coordinator, Jaswinder Singh Advocate to appear before the five high priests on March 29, Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti has asked him to clarify about his organisation’s involvement in the demonstration. It is learnt that Akal Takht has taken serious note of a protest against Dasam Granth, by some Sikh youth organisations, including Akal Purakh Ki Fauj.

Church, interfaith body to take up Sikh issues

Amritsar: Before Sikhs’ single largest representative body , Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, could raise the issues pertaining Sikh identity crisis, especially the turban ban in France post 9/11, at the international platform, the Church of Scientology, World Council of Churches and International Interfaith, Switzerland, came for its rescue.
The Church of Scientology has decided to take up the issues pertaining to protecting Sikhs’ distinct identity with their counterparts in France with an aim to generate a pressure group to press upon French government to withdraw its controversial and alleged anti-minority decision so they could enjoy their religious freedom.
World Council of Churches Programme Executive president Jurg Stettler, chairman Hans Ucko and secretary general Charles Graves announced their decision in a special programme held at Gurdwara Sahib, Langenthal, Switzerland on Monday. Tempers flare up in Phagwara

Phagwara: After a peaceful half-day bandh, tension prevailed in the township late on Monday evening. As angry Sikh protesters and devotees, from inside the temple, fought pitched battles and hurled stones at each other, the police had to resort to lathicharge to bring a semblance of order.
Sikh organisations had given a bandh call in protest against a programme held by Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthaan. The tension eased following parleys between representatives of Sikh and Hindu bodies. But in the evening, Sikh protesters again blocked traffic, alleging breach of compromise by the other party.
Late Sunday evening, the Sikh organisations had blocked traffic on National Highway for around two hours and damaged three buses, leading to tension in the town. In place of “Sikhs versus Sansthaan”, the situation had turned into “Sikhs versus Hindus”. Sikh organisations took umbrage at the sermons delivered by preachers of Sansthaan during a religious function at Hanuman Garhi Mandir. They had submitted a memorandum to the SDM, requesting him to stop the Sansthaan programme. SDM Balwinder Singh Dhariwal said it was decided that the religious programme, which was being organised in connection with Ram Navami, would continue but the Sansthaan would not participate. Both sides agreed to this proposal. However, when the programme started on Tuesday evening, preachers allegedly from the same Sansthaan started conducting it. As the news about it spread, Sikh protesters blocked the national highway at Hoshiarpur Chowk point. Even as SSP Rakesh Aggarwal and SDM Balwinder Singh Dhariwal reached the spot the groups began pelting stones. Following this the police lathicharged the protesters and also used tear gas shells to disperse them.
Earlier, the police booked Sikh activists for damaging property, blocking road and for hurting religious sentiments.
