Sarna, Makkar to sink differences
FATEHGARH SAHIB: Pakistan Sikh
Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(PSGPC) president
Bishan Singh has appealed to Shiromani Gurdwara
Parbandhak Committee(SGPC) president Avtar
Singh Makkar and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management
Committee(DSGMC) president Paramjit Singh Sarna
to sink their differences and work for the
interests of Sikh community.

at Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, where a
delegation of 60 Pak visitors led by Bishan
Singh was accorded warm welcome by SGPC members
Didar Singh Bhatti, Karnail Singh Panjoli,
former minister Randhir Singh Cheema and
others, PSGPC chief said that SGPC and DSGMC
should work in tandem for propagation if
Sikhism.
He appealed the India government
to send a Jatha of at least 5,000 devotees to
Pakistan on the eve of Baisakhi and all the
members of Jatha would be accorded warm welcome
as they are highly impressed by their
hospitality in India. He said that visa

unscrupulous elements through their activities
in India try to disturb peace only to spoil
relations of India and Pakistan, which will not

India and Pak has improved only with the
efforts to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf,

Golden Palanquin donated by DSGMC
not to be installed at Sanctum Sanctrum: Bishan
Singh
PATIALA: The president of Pakistan
Sikh Gurdawara Parbandak Committee (PSGPC) Bishan
Singh and acting president of PSGPC Swaran Singh
said here Saturday that golden palanquin, donated
by Delhi Sikh Gurdawara Management Committee (DSGMC)
Chief Paramjit Singh Sarna at Nankana Sahib, will
not be insatalled at Sanctum Sanctrum of Gurdwara
Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib. In an informal chat
with select scribes the Sikh leaders of Pakistan
said that they would not distort the old structure
of Gurdawara Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib to install
it. He said that Palanquin did not have any
historic value and if Sangat wanted to replace old
structure of Gurdawara Janam Asthan the whole
Gurdawara will have golden plates, he added.
Regarding condition of Gurdawaras in Pakistan
Bishan Singh said that there were over 150 historic
Gurdawaras and only 25 Gurdawaras were open for the
public, there was no Sikh population in the areas
where the other Gurdawaras were situated, he
added. The Pak Sikh leaders however appealed that
all Gurdawara committees should be under one
control which will facilitate the Sikhs in abroad
to have good signal of unity among the Sikhs, they
were commenting on the inconsistency between SGPC
and DSGMC. Regarding free corridor for Gurdwara
Kartarpur Sahib, situated just two km from the
international border at Dera Baba Nanak, they
alleged that Indian Government was not serioud
about it and has been adopting dilly delaying
tactics. They said that Pakistan General Pervez
Musharraf and Prime Minister Shakaut Aziz has
already given nod for the corridor and it was
Indian Government to respond on it. "The
long-cherished dream of Sikhs to cross over the
international border on foot to pay obeisance at
Gurdawara Kartarpur Sahib would have been fulfilled
earlier if Indian Government responded the offer of
Pakistan Government. They lamented that even a Sikh
prime minister of India had not done any thing
about it. PSGPC president
Bishan Singh, who led the jatha 53 Pak visitors
from Pakistan said they had taken the nod for the
corridor from Pakistan President General Pervez
Musharraf and wanted Punjab chief Minister Parkash
Singh Badal to take up the issue with the Indian
government. They were here to pay obeisance at the
Gurdawara Dukh Niwaran sahib and visit other
historic Gurdawaras in Punjab. |
|
New Govt brings Indo-Pak Sikh bodies
closer
|
The change of Government
in Punjab has also changed equations
between the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak
Committee (SGPC) and Pakistan Sikh
Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) and
brought to an end the supremacy of Delhi
Sikh Gurdwara Management committee (DSGMC)
in the Sikh politics related to gurdwaras
situated in Pakistan. |
|
|
Paramjit Singh Sarna, president of DSGMC,
with the support of former Punjab Chief
Minister Amarinder Singh had established his
direct communication channels with PSGPC
bypassing authority of SGPC.
|
|
The DSGMC had undertaken a religious
procession from Delhi to Nankana Sahib to woo
the urban Sikhs in Punjab before the Assembly
elections. The Sikhs had rejected all the
candidates supported by Sarna in the recently
held Assembly elections. |
|
The two management committees had in the past
crossed swords over handling arrangements at
gurdwaras in Pakistan and performing kar sewa
beside deciding the number of pilgrims
allowed to visit Pakistan. The DSGMC has been
sending 'jathas' to Pakistan without taking
SGPC into confidence. |
|
The PSGPC president who is on visit to India
had recently announced carrying out of 'kar
sewa' for maintenance of gurdwaras in
Pakistan in collaboration with SGPC. Bishan
Singh and SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar
made this announcement in Amritsar. They also
decided to construct more inns for Sikh |
|
pilgrims visiting Pakistan. Makkar has
reciprocated the gestures by declaring that
SGPC had no conflict with its Pakistan
counterpart. Bishan Singh also announced that
the Akal Takht guidelines for installation of
Golden Palanquin in Nankana Sahib would be
followed. |
|
The SGPC also intended to facilitate the Sikh
devotees who come to Pakistan from various
countries to pay obeisance in the different
Sikh shrines by constructing a super class
guesthouse with ultra modern facilities, with
400 rooms. Bishan Singh said that there were
over 150 historic gurdwaras and only 25
gurdwaras were open for the public, there was
no Sikh population in the areas where the
other gurdwaras were situated. |
|
Bishan Singh and acting president Swaran
Singh on Saturday reiterated to open the
corridor up to Kartarpur Sahib in Lahore in
Pakistan for which Pakistan President General
Pervez Musharraf has already given his
consent. They said that the ball was now in
the court of the Indian Government. The
Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara related with Guru
Nanak Devji is just two km away from the
Indo-Pak border but there is no direct access
to the place. |
|
In an informal chat with select scribes here
the Sikh leaders of Pakistan said that "The
long-cherished dream of Sikhs to cross over
the international border on foot to pay
obeisance at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib would
have been fulfilled earlier if the Indian
Government responded to Pakistan Government's
offer. They lamented that even a Sikh Prime
Minister of India had not done anything about
it. |
|
Bishan Singh, who led the Jatha of 53 Pak
visitors from Pakistan said they had taken
the nod for the corridor from Pakistan
President General Pervez Musharraf and wanted
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to
take up the issue with the Indian Government. |
|
They were here to pay obeisance at the
Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib and visit other
historic gurdwaras in Punjab. |
|
The Pak Sikh leaders also appealed for a
joint control of all gurdwara committees
which would give a signal of unity to the
Sikhs abroad |

Representation for women in PSGPC
Decision on ‘palki’ after Takht nod
Wagah
In a significant development, the Pakistan Sikh
Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) has decided
to give due representation to women at the time of
the annual election scheduled to be held next year.
This was stated by Bishan Singh, president, PSGPC,
who reached here along with other members of the
committee. They have come on pilgrimage to Sikh
shrines, including Harmandar Sahib, Anandpur Sahib
and Khadoor Sahib.
The PSGPC president said the government of Pakistan
had already accepted the demand of the Sikh
community to construct a corridor between Dera Baba
Nanak (India) and Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib
(Pakistan). He said Pakistan expected a reciprocal
gesture from India so that Sikh devotees could
undertake pilgrimage of these gurdwaras without any
visa hassles. To a question, Bishan Singh said any
decision to install 'palki' (golden palanquin),
taken from New Delhi to Nankana Sahib, would be
taken through consensus of Akal Takht, SGPC, Delhi
Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and the PSGPC.
The jatha members were accorded a warm welcome by
the SGPC members and senior officials, including
Jaswinder Singh advocate, Bibi Kiranjot Kaur,
Sawinder Singh Dobalia, Kuldip Singh Bawa,
Jaswinder Singh Jassi and Ram Singh at Wagah joint
check post. However, there was a minor scuffle when
a leader of a Sikh organisation, Swarn Singh, came
forward to garland the PSGPC chief. It was objected
to by SGPC employees who had made arrangements for
'Langar' and refreshments at Wagah.
In yet another significant move, the PSGPC has
approached the government of Pakistan to add Sikh
history to the curriculum of different educational
institutions.
Answering a question, Bishan Singh said more serais
were being constructed at Nankana Sahib so that
devotees did not suffer any inconvenience at the
time of pilgrimage.
