Pak panel to fight against French ban on turban

Amritsa
The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) has, in principle, decided to join hands with the SGPC and other Sikh organisations of the world in their fight against the decision of the French Government to ban the wearing of turbans in the state-run schools.

This was conveyed by Bishan Singh, president, PSGPC to SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar at their meeting in the Darbar Sahib complex, here today. He said a deputation of the PSGPC would meet Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Islamabad next month so that he could use his good offices to prevail upon his France counter-part to lift ban on the wearing of turban or head-gear in the state- run schools. He said the PSGPC would also take up the issue of ban on carrying kirpan in Denmark since Sikhs in Pakistan wanted to be part of the crusade, launched by the community the world over against unjust ban on kirpan and turban in Denmark and France.

In another statement, the SGPC chief assured the visiting PSGPC chief to send maximum number of raagis and granthis to Pakistan on their demand to ensure the propagation of faith in the country. On the issue of making Kartarpur corridor, linking Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib (Pakistan) with Gurdwara Dera Baba Nanak (India), the SGPC chief endorsed the views of his Pakistani counterpart that the delay was on the part of the Indian Government. The SGPC chief said after meeting Pakistan's Prime Minister who agreed to construct the corridor, he met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who chose dilly-dallying tactics on the issue.

On the installation of “palki” (golden palanquin), taken from New Delhi to Nankana Sahib, Makkar said the SGPC would like to preserve the old structure of the sanctum sanctorum.

The PSGPC chief will also meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at Punjab Bhavan, Chandigarh, tomorrow .

The SGPC chief refuted the charge of the Haryana Government that donations, collected from Sikh shrines in Haryana were not being spent on gurdwaras in Haryana . Giving statistics, SGPC chief said Rs 7 crore were collected by the SGPC in the past three years from Sikh shrines in Haryana while it spent Rs 16 crore on expansion of gurdwaras there.

SGPC has no conflict with Pak Gurdawara body

AMRITSAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC)  president Avtar Singh Makkar said that SGPC has not any religious conflict with the PSGPC (Pakistan based Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee).

Makkar said that SGPC would send special team of religious teachers in Pakistan to impart education about Sikh religious literature and to read and sing religious hymns as per the Sikh traditions.

In a release issued here today Makkar said that SGPC was willing to construct inn (guest house for Sikh devotees) in Pakistan and all the construction cost would be born by the SGPC.

Adding further Makkar said that SGPC intended to facilitate the Sikh devotees who come to Pakistan from the various countries to pay obeisance in the different Sikh shrines by making super class guesthouse with ultra modern facilities, consisting four hundred rooms.

Makkar said that the message in this regard was already conveyed to the PSGPC which had already arranged land in Pakistan for the construction of inn to be made by SGPC.

SAD protest move

Fatehabad, Activists of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Haryana, today organised a demonstration here to protest against the proposal to set up a separate gurdwara committee to manage the affairs of Sikh shrines in the state.

The SAD activists started their demonstration from Panchayat Bhawan and marched towards the mini secretariat raising slogans against the state government's move for a separate body.

They tried to stop vehicular traffic outside the mini secretariat, but the move was immediately thwarted by the police.

The agitating SAD workers gave a memorandum to the DC to be forwarded to the Haryana Chief Minister and the Governor.

Copies of the memorandum were also forwarded to the President of India, Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister.

The memorandum said SAD expressed its strong opposition and resentment on the move for a separate gurdwara committee for the state, as it was contrary to law and practice.

SGPC to oppose gurdwara panel for state

Kurukshetra
The executive committee (EC) of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), at a meeting held under the chairmanship of president Avtar Singh resolved to oppose the formation of separate gurdwara parbandhak committee for the Sikhs of Haryana.

A decision to this effect was conveyed by Avtar Singh to reporters at a press conference on the premises of gurdwara Chhevin (sixth) Paatshahi situated in the Haryana Sikh Mission office here today.

Addressing the press conference, Mr Avtar Singh and Mr Radhuvir Singh Virk, senior vice-president, SGPC, said a meeting of the SGPC general body had been convened in Amritsar on March 29 to decide next course of action.

Both leaders had threatened the Haryana government the SGPC will oppose separate gurdwara parbandhak committee for the Sikhs of Haryana. They alleged the Congress-led Haryana government was trying to divide the Sikhs.

They claimed the SGPC was an institution of Sikhs in the whole world and nobody would be allowed to interfere into Sikh religious matters.

Opposing the formation the of HSGPC, both leaders claimed there were 18 lakh Sikhs in Haryana but only three lakh of them were demanding separate HSGPC.

When asked about providing Ravi-Beas waters by Punjab to Haryana the SGPC chief said the water issue was government issue while theirs was a religious issue.

Meanwhile, the office-bearers of the HSGPC (Ad hoc), including Jathedar Jagdish Singh Jhinda, member SGPC and president, HSGPC (Ad hoc) as well as Jathedar Didar Singh Nalvi, member SGPC and general secretary, HSGPC, in a joint statement here today demanded the executive committee of the SGPC at a meeting here today and its general body meeting to be held on March 29 in Amritsar, instead of opposing the formation of separate HSGPC, should express faith in Haryana Sikhs by resolving to support the formation of the HSGPC.

In another resolution, the HSGPC (Ad hoc) office bearers demanded the SGPC should given up charge of Haryana gurdwaras by giving Haryana gurdwaras’ charge to the HSGPC (Ad hoc) on the Baisakhi day of April 13.

In the remaining four unanimous resolutions, the HSGPC (Ad hoc) thanked the Haryana Government for passing a resolution for the formation of separate HSGPC under Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966 presented by Mr Nirmal Singh, MLA from Naggal (Ambala) constituency in Haryana Assembly on March 15, 2007. The HSGPC (Ad hoc) condemned the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MLAs for walking out from the Assembly in protest against the said resolution on the  same day. The HSGPC  (Ad hoc) also condemned the SGPC and the Akali Dal (Badal) government  for opposing the formation of separate HSGPC  at a meeting and the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, respectively. The HSGPC (Ad hoc) clarified the Haryana Sikhs would support the Haryana government’s claim on Ravi-Beas waters.

Representation for women in PSGPC
Decision on ‘palki’ after Takht nod

Wagah
In a significant development, the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) has decided to give due representation to women at the time of the annual election scheduled to be held next year.

This was stated by Bishan Singh, president, PSGPC, who reached here along with other members of the committee. They have come on pilgrimage to Sikh shrines, including Harmandar Sahib, Anandpur Sahib and Khadoor Sahib.

The PSGPC president said the government of Pakistan had already accepted the demand of the Sikh community to construct a corridor between Dera Baba Nanak (India) and Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib (Pakistan). He said Pakistan expected a reciprocal gesture from India so that Sikh devotees could undertake pilgrimage of these gurdwaras without any visa hassles. To a question, Bishan Singh said any decision to install 'palki' (golden palanquin), taken from New Delhi to Nankana Sahib, would be taken through consensus of Akal Takht, SGPC, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and the PSGPC.

The jatha members were accorded a warm welcome by the SGPC members and senior officials, including Jaswinder Singh advocate, Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, Sawinder Singh Dobalia, Kuldip Singh Bawa, Jaswinder Singh Jassi and Ram Singh at Wagah joint check post. However, there was a minor scuffle when a leader of a Sikh organisation, Swarn Singh, came forward to garland the PSGPC chief. It was objected to by SGPC employees who had made arrangements for 'Langar' and refreshments at Wagah.

In yet another significant move, the PSGPC has approached the government of Pakistan to add Sikh history to the curriculum of different educational institutions.

Answering a question, Bishan Singh said more serais were being constructed at Nankana Sahib so that devotees did not suffer any inconvenience at the time of pilgrimage.
